PEPPERIDGE FARM OAT BREAD THEN vs. NOW
PEPPERIDGE FARM HOMESTYLE OAT BREAD >> not what the Founder created
RAPID REVIEW
Information updated August 2024
Once upon a time, Pepperidge Farm Bread was Closest To Homemade® >> it was made with only the highest quality ingredients, a standard set by the founder, Mrs. Margaret Rudkin. Her objective was “making sure that every loaf was as good as it could be.” (Sources: Campbell’s Pepperidge Farm Web site 2023; Historical Pepperidge Farm Bread Print Advertisement)
Seen below, PEPPERIDGE FARM HOMESTYLE OAT BREAD: Here’s what’s in Pepperidge Farm Homestyle Oat Bread in 2024 >> three ingredients banned at Whole Foods including Calcium Propionate, Sorbic Acid and Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate plus Soybean Oil, Citric Acid, Monoglycerides and Soy Lecithin. These ingredients are Not In Kitchen™ when making homemade Bread and they certainly were not in Mrs. Rudkin’s kitchen. (Source for ingredients: Campbell’s Pepperidge Farm Web site 8/23; Source for banned ingredients: Amazon Whole Foods Web site 8/24)
This Pepperidge Farm bread is called “Homestyle” but it is Far From Homemade >> there are multiple ingredients which are not in anyone’s home kitchen including three which are banned at Whole Foods.
Sugar is the fourth ingredient.
In the Founder’s days, 93 score AA Butter was used. The historical print ad above states it is “the highest quality available” and “no other shortening is ever used in Pepperidge Farm Bread.” Unfortunately, those who run Pepperidge Farm decided to abandon their Founder’s pure ingredient vision.
There is no Butter in this Homestyle Oat Bread . . . but there is a cheap commercial oil you’ve never used at home >> Soybean Oil.
Despite defying her vision, Pepperidge Farm continues to invoke the Founder’s values which have been compromised.
