WHICH SALTINES ARE CLOSEST TO HOMEMADE?
SALTINES — CLOSEST TO HOMEMADE®
Information updated February 2024 and April 2024
Saltine Crackers are so simple and delicious! If we were making Saltines at home, the ingredients might look something like these >> Flour, Water, Butter or Oil, Baking Soda, Yeast and Salt.
Despite a homemade recipe being so simple, many manufactured Saltine Crackers can include ingredients Not In Kitchen™ >> ingredients we would never use at home to make Saltines such as Commercial Oils, Chemical Preservatives and/or Added Sweeteners. Following are some Saltines which contain these types of ingredients and then we’ll see some whose ingredients are Closest To Homemade.
Seen below, these Saltines contain oils we would never use at home to make Crackers such as Soybean Oil and Palm Oil:
These Saltines below contain commercial preservatives such as Ascorbic Acid, Citric Acid and TBHQ. TBHQ is an acronym for a Chemical Preservative which stands for Tert Butylhydroquinone and it is banned at Whole Foods Market who cites it as “Unacceptable in food”. Ironically, Amazon’s Amazon Fresh Saltine Crackers — below center bottom — are banned at Whole Foods even though Amazon owns Whole Foods. So . . . Amazon is using an ingredient in their line of food products that Amazon-owned Whole Foods cites as Unacceptable.
Some Saltines including those below contain an added Sweetener:
Shown below, The Kellogg Company produces Saltine Crackers as Kellogg’s Krispy, Sunshine Krispy and Zesta >> these three Saltines have the exact same ingredients including Soybean Oil with TBHQ.. These Kellogg Crackers also contain an added sweetener in the form of Corn Syrup plus Soy Lecithin, both of which are Not In Kitchen when making homemade Saltines.
CLOSEST TO HOMEMADE: The good news is there is a trio of Closest To Homemade® Saltines with no added Sweeteners, MSG, TBHQ, Yeast Extract, Artificial Colors, Soybean Oil, Canola Oil or Flavors.
Seen below, these include Annie’s Organic Saltine Classics made with Organic Wheat Flour and Organic Expeller-Pressed Sunflower Oil; Non-GMO Project verified Whole Foods 365 Saltine Crackers made with Unbleached Enriched Wheat Flour and Expeller Pressed Safflower Seed Oil, and Non-GMO Project verified Simple Mills certified Gluten Free Crackers with Fine Ground Sea Salt made with Cassava Flour + a Nut and Seed Flour Blend including Almonds, Sunflower Seeds and Flax Seeds made with Organic Sunflower Oil.
