WHAT'S IN SPAM?

SPAM

RAPID REVIEW

Information updated March 2024

SPAM was introduced in the U.S. in 1937 by Hormel and today there are 11 varieties:

CLASSIC SPAM: Here’s what’s in a can of Classic SPAM >> Pork with Ham, Salt, Water, Modified Potato Starch, Sugar and Sodium Nitrite. SPAM is banned at Whole Foods Market for Sodium Nitrite — an FDA-recognized Chemical Preservative — an ingredient which Whole Foods cites as “Unacceptable in food”. (Sources: U.S. FDA 2024; Amazon Whole Foods Web site 3/24)

Seen below, SPAM CLASSIC vs. SPAM CLASSIC SINGLE COMPARISON: The Single of Classic SPAM is not exactly the same as the product in the can . . . the SPAM Single Classic also contains Potassium Chloride.

SPAM CLASSIC vs. SPAM LITE COMPARISON: SPAM Lite may have less fat, sodium and calories compared to SPAM Classic, but SPAM Lite has more ingredients Not In Kitchen™ . . . plus Chicken.
