WHAT'S IN COOL WHIP?
COOL WHIP — FAR FROM HOMEMADE™
RAPID REVIEW
Information updated September 2024
THEN vs. NOW COMPARISON: Cool Whip has always been a product of Food Science. Cool Whip was created by the Birds Eye Company — the original pioneers of frozen food. Below left, we see one of the early iterations of Cool Whip and its ingredients (THEN). At this point in time, it contained real Sugar and real Vanilla. (Source: Historical Birds Eye Cool Whip package)
Now, below right, Cool Whip is manufactured and owned by Kraft Heinz and contains three ingredients which are banned at Whole Foods including High Fructose Corn Syrup as the third ingredient, Hydrogenated Oils — including Hydrogenated Palm Kernel Oil — and Artificial Flavor. The real Sugar and real Vanilla are gone. (Sources: Kraft Heinz My Food & Family Web site 9/24; Amazon Whole Foods Web site 9/24)
Ingredients are always listed in descending order of amount.
The first four ingredients in Cool Whip used to be Water, Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil, Sugar and Vanilla. Now, the first four ingredients are Water, Corn Syrup, High Fructose Corn Syrup and Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil.
Cool Whip has gone from Far From Homemade to even farther from homemade.
